Ukraine adopts Green Tariff PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 25 September 2008

september08Press release published by the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association on the Introduction of a Feed-in-Tariff in the Ukraine:

Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA) welcomes the adoption of feed-in tariffs in Ukraine. Today, on 25 September 2008, the Law “On Amendments to the Laws of Ukraine “On Electricity” and ”On Alternative Sources of Energy” was approved by Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (359 parliamentarians out of 426 registered in the Hall of Session said “Yes” to “green” tariff in Ukraine).

According to the law “Green” tariff is “a special tariff for electricity generated at the power plants with use of alternative energy sources (except blast-furnace and coking gases; concerning hydro energy plants - at the SHPP with capacity less 10 MW)”.

The Law obliges wholesale electricity market of Ukraine to purchase electricity generated at the power plants with use of alternative sources of energy through special “green” tariffs which are to be adopted by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission of Ukraine. “Green” tariffs are available for 10 years period.

Meanwhile Ukrainian Wind Energy Association hopes that the appropriate methods for calculating renewable energies “green” tariffs will be developed and considering the successful experience of wind technologies development gained by the acknowledged world leaders – Germany, Spain, Denmark , the “green” tariffs validity period will be prolonged for 15-20 years. Such decisions that ensure fruitful investment attraction will make renewable energy market of Ukraine favorable and attractive for investors.

According to WWEA modern wind industry with global installed capacity of about 100 000 MW, generates nowadays more than 200 bln kWh per year, equalling 1,3% of the global electricity consumption, while in some countries wind energy contributes to 40% and more. The wind industry employs today 350.000 people worldwide.

Adoption of “green” tariff in Ukraine has made a significant step forward for strengthening energy security and independence of Ukraine, sustainable economic development of the country. Transition of national energy sector towards local renewable energy sources will improve the energy supplies of these regions and directly contribute to their fast economic and social development. Ukraine with one of the best wind energy potential in Europe finally has got a chance to use it. Renewable energy is a key tool to solve problems related with current ever growing deficit of energy carriers; renewables give us a real possibility to combat climate change on the planet.

Book reviews

Paul Gipe (full review on Paul Gipe's website)

"Wind Energy International 2009/2010 reminded me of the solid feel you get when you close a door on a Mercedes or BMW: The feeling of quality, the knowledge that there are still people who take their jobs seriously and do it right. This is a book that was done right. It was written by the right people for the right reasons and printed on quality paper in full color. (...) This is the latest edition of what has become the standard yearbook on wind energy development worldwide. Wind Energy International includes individual article on wind energy in 100 different countries plus features on policies, trends in the industry, financing, and much more. It is simply too much to list (...). If you want to know the status of wind energy development worldwide and you only can afford one book, this is the one. As valuable and useful as the statistics are alone, an equally important contribution is the contact details for the authors of each individual country report as well as authors of the technical articles. These alone are worth their weight in gold for those wanting a quick introduction to who's who in wind energy. (...)"
